The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) compiles the Human Development Index (HDI) of 189 countries in the annual Human Development Report.The index considers the health, education and income in a given country to provide a measure of human development which is comparable between countries and over time. This UNDP publication recommends actions for policymakers to enhance the benefits and reduce the costs of human mobility to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2009 Human Development Report Overcoming Barriers: Human Mobility and Development, made the case that human mobility not only contributes to improving the lives of migrants and their families, but is a driver of development in countries of origin and destination. The 2019 Human Development Report’s deep dive into the changing faces of inequality sharpened our thinking and action, including on social protection.
